Refurbishment and Addition of Two Flats to Old Dartmoor Schoolhouse
Built by the church this Victorian town schoolhouse currently used by a local playgroup was in desperate need of major refurbishment and upgrading. Leaking roof, damp ingress, poor heating, uninsulated and no longer fit for purpose renowned local architect Paul Heighway was commissioned for the work by the Diocese of Exeter with Bovey Construction as main contractor.
Innovatively, Paul added a floor and created two new maisonettes for use by the church whilst a complete renovation to the lower ground floor saw the playgroup continue to occupy the same space within the building but now with a light and modern feel, new services, toilets, kitchen area and a warm, well heated environment.
A very difficult site in the centre of a busy coastal town with poor access
Waterproofing the existing basement/ground floor structure
Adding a new floor to the building complete with cantilevered balcony
Working with Father Will and his team was great fun and a very positive experience
Achieving a good level of insulation and heating throughout the building
Completing on time to see the play group take up residence in the new term
