Stunning Salcombe Refurbishment
LABC Regional Finalist

Architect: Robert Seymour Architects
Site Manager: Simon Curling

This interesting project included of the construction of a large retaining wall to the rear of the property and the formation of a new vehicle access and drive. The access drive was formed with pre-cast concrete beams at the road level.

A new entrance and barrel-shaped staircase under a modern zink roof was designed to complement the existing house. The space under the new driveway was enough to create a delightful one bedroomed annex to the property. This extension is of contemporary design with barrel-shaped curves created in cedar boarding at each end, and a single pitch zinc standing seam roof designed to juxtapose the traditional red brick and tile hung façade of the original house.
Challenges:
  • The front façade of this building was formed from local stone to a height of over 6m. The construction process involved the removal of around 1000 Ton of excavated material from the site.
Successes:
  • We added waterproof tanking to the beam and block roof structure as well as linking this to a delta membrane system on the rear retaining wall to ensure a completely watertight structure.
  • We constructed the retaining wall in sections to ensure the continuous support of the public highway above. Rock anchors were incorporated, extending some 12m under the highway and into the substrate on the other side of the road.
Awards:
  • Regional Finalists in the 'Best Domestic Extension or Alteration' category at the LABC South West Building Excellence Awards 2013.
  • Regional Finalists in the 'Best Technical Innovation' category at the LABC South West Building Excellence Awards 2013.
