Bovey Construction, based in Caton, Ashburton, South
Devon, has won a highly commended in the small domestic category
of the 2004 National Built In Quality Awards. The award was made
on the basis of two innovative and contrasting extensions on a
1920s bungalow at Haytor in Dartmoor National Park. This puts
the rural firm in the top three building firms in the country,
specialising in domestic work.
Simon Curling, the project’s site manager,
was accompanied to the ceremony in London on 10 June by Andrew
Carpenter and Rodney Gover from Teignbridge Council Building Control,
who nominated Bovey Construction for the awards. The construction
firm won 210 out of a possible 230 points on the score sheet,
which applies a range of criteria from quality of construction
to the site environment.
Nominating Bovey Construction for the award, the
surveyors’ department described the project as “very
difficult, combining modern and traditional materials”.
The modern element is shown most clearly in the semi-circular
garden room, which was constructed in steel and glass, but still
required traditional, hard-earned skills. In contrast, the finely
crafted glass and wood entrance hall literally plugs a gap –
thereby eliminating a wind tunnel – between two gables each
side of the main entrance.
