NOT AS EASY AS IT LOOKS
Visitors to Manaton Fair on Dartmoor on Saturday
9 August faced an unusual challenge: to build a wall in a competition
run by Bovey Construction of Caton, Ashburton. Not a large wall,
as it was a hot day, but large enough for Darren Gascoigne, Bovey
Construction's contracts manager and a time-served and experienced
bricklayer himself, to gauge potential skills. It was also just
about right for contestants from four to 40 years old to have
some fun.

There were two winners in the children's competition,
which attracted the girls as well as the boys. Four-year-old Naomi
Thorns from Manaton showed great enthusiasm and confidence, winning
appropriately a Duplo construction set. The other young winner
was 14-year-old Sam Harrower from Kingskerswell, Newton Abbot,
whose careful and methodical work earned him a Lego set.
Representing the dads, Dave Alexander,
a mechanical engineer from Chudleigh Knighton, who had never tried
bricklaying before, proved a quick learner and won a bottle of
champagne for his efforts. "All he needs to do now is lay
500 in a day," said Neil Turner, managing director of Bovey
Construction, which also sponsored the fair's classic cars rally.

"It was great fun and a useful learning
experience for contestants," said Neil. "Those who haven't
tried their hand at bricklaying don't appreciate the level of
skill involved. It's certainly not as easy as the professionals
make it look. But if Sam or Naomi come back in few years' time,
we'd be delighted to sponsor them on an NVQ course."
