Training Award
Bovey Construction is one of just two organisations in the South West to win a 2006 National Training Award for a training programme designed to improve the performance of our five site managers. It enabled all five to develop key management skills they and their teams had identified, and, as a result, the business has seen remarkable results, not least an additional £10 in profits for every £1 spent on training.:
Training in the UK
The average age of the craft workforce in construction
in the South West is getting higher as the working population is
ageing. With more people leaving the industry than joining it, the
skills shortage is set to continue. This is particularly critical
in times of high demand.
If the ageing skilled workforce does not share
its knowledge and experience with a younger generation willing to
train and adopt traditional skills, the situation will get progressively
worse.
That is one reason why we employ such a diverse
and talented team, where new recruits can look forward to a rewarding
career using skills that are continually developed.
Our goal is to have a fully qualified workforce, and we support
the Major Contractors Group and the DTI, who are leading the industry
in this.
At Bovey Construction, training is a part of
life, and at any one time, over 30% of our site team - from the
MD to the newest recruit - are actively training, either acquiring
new craft skills or increasing existing ones.
We have excellent relationships with two local
colleges, where team members attend day and block release courses:
